Fading

Austria 2026
A film by Karl Wratschko
Shooting Format: Found Footage
Duration: 6 minutes
Screening Format: DCP, b/w, Sound

Fading examines the dissolve as a cinematic device and discusses the phenomenon of fading in all its facets. In the spirit of Appreciation Art, the film presents the ten films that were shown at the Lumière brothers' first public paid screening at the Salon Indien du Grand Café in Paris on 28 December 1895. In this cinematic experiment, the films from that screening are shown in chronological order, and each new film is dissolved over the previously shown films. With each successive dissolve the image fades increasingly, so that in the end only a white screen remains.
